Elections Up-date

I’d be remiss if I didn’t remark on the municipal elections held yesterday in Jersey City and Hoboken.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t remark on the municipal elections held yesterday in Jersey City and Hoboken.

Carol Marsh fought David Roberts to a stand still. They will have a run-off election on June 18 (I think that’s right). Tony Soares, one of Carol’s running mates, won an at-large seat. Brian Urbano and Ines Garcia Keim both came in just short of doing so. For a campaign that has struggled to pay its bills, this is a resounding success. Only two of Roberts’ cronies won at-large positions, which means that Carol should have a somewhat balanced Council to work with after she trounces Roberts in the run-off.

In Jersey City, Jerry Healy swept into office with almost eighty percent of the vote. Considering his ticket held every serious contender from the special election where he first won the mayor’s seat, that isn’t surprising. What is a surprise is that two of Healy’s single-member running mates were booted. Congrats to DFA-backed Steven Fullop and to Viola Richardson. Fullop beat out incumbent Junior Maldonado and Richardson, who was the incumbent, beat Healy teammate Rev. Ronnie Clark.

I also want to take a moment to promote Chris Bell and his campaign to return sanity in Texas. Chris is growing strong and no serious contenders have risen up to challenge him in the primary. Perhaps Texas Dems are finally getting smart and getting behind a real leader for a change.

You can help by having a house party for Chris on June 12.
